Q: What is an "impact carb"?
A: The impact carbs listed on the label are those that may affect blood glucose levels, and are very low in Myoplex Carb Sense Bars. In contrast, "non-impact" carbs have very little effect on blood glucose levels and therefore are not significant for those following a low carbohydrate diet. While these carbs provide a sweet taste to the bar, for the most part the body cannot metabolize "non-impact" carbs, which means these carbs are ideal for those looking to lose fat.
Q: What are fructooligosaccharides and glycerol, and why are they not added into the carbohydrate totals on the products that include them?
A: Fructooligosaccharides (FOS; oligofructose) are a type of fiber found in a variety of common plants, fruits, and vegetables. Although you may extract it from any of these sources, the most common source used in supplements is derived from chicory root, due to its high concentrations of FOS.
The source for most supplemental glycerol (glycerine) is vegetable oil. Glycerol is classified as a sugar alcohol, which technically would qualify it as a carbohydrate. However, once in the body, glycerol is rarely used as a source of energy—typically, it will pass through unchanged, or your body may use it as a “carrier” for fatty acids.
Both of these ingredients, technically speaking, are carbohydrates. However, the body cannot break down FOS, and glycerine is preferentially used for functions other than energy production in the body. As such, it is not currently required that these particular ingredients be included in the carbohydrate totals. However, both compounds do contain calories, thus the FDA requires that we add these ingredients into the caloric totals of the products into which they are added (even if the body cannot, or is unlikely to use them for energy).
